Natural Stone for Bathrooms & Wet Areas
Natural stone in bathrooms and showers brings a luxurious impression, but also concerns about water, mold, slipping, and discoloration. In practice, problems are more often caused not by the stone name but by whether the waterproofing membrane, slope, finish, joints, and sealing work together as one system.
We often hear, “Is marble in a shower always impossible?”, “Does granite eliminate the need for waterproofing?”, or “Can a polished finish be used on the floor?” Marble can be used, but its etching and maintenance burden must be designed for. Granite still does not eliminate waterproofing, slip control, or sealing. Stone itself is not the waterproof layer.

First things to know: stone is the finish; waterproofing is the layer behind it
Wet-area guidance from MIA/NSI and TCNA-related sources consistently stresses an ANSI A118.10-rated waterproofing membrane, or equivalent, and a flood test before stone is installed. Shower pans and membranes should extend sufficiently up the wall above curb height, and the integrity of floor waterproofing should be confirmed by a flood test meeting applicable code and specifications, including references such as ASTM D5957, before stone work begins.
Grout and tile or stone faces are not waterproofing. Water can pass through them or enter gaps at grout and sealant, so assuming “thick stone will be fine” is risky. Areas with continuous moisture, such as steam rooms, may require a separate vapor-retarder specification in addition to waterproofing. Distinguish an ordinary shower from a steam installation during design.
1. Divide wet, semi-wet, and dry areas on the drawings
Even within one bathroom, the shower interior, vanity top, dry vanity wall, and shared powder room face different exposure. Shower floors and walls receive sustained water, soap, and cleaner; countertops receive water, cosmetics, perfume, acids, and oils; dry walls have less demand. It is practical to set stone type, finish, and sealing intervals by zone.
Large slabs make walls look continuous and reduce joints, but openings, corners, movement joints, and silicone zones do not disappear. Transitions such as wall-to-floor, niches, and curbs are often specified with flexible sealant rather than rigid grout. Pursuing “zero joints” alone increases cracking and leakage risk.

2. Put waterproofing, slope, and flood testing before stone
The usual sequence is substrate preparation, waterproofing membrane, slope mortar and drainage where required, a passed flood test, then stone installation. Floors require sufficient fall toward the drain to reduce ponding, slip risk, and mold. Korean practice often refers to roughly 1:50 to 1:100 fall, while overseas stone manuals may cite about 1/4 inch per foot (about 2%) for shower floors. Give priority to the project specification and plumbing design.
Corners and drain areas are where waterproofing first fails. Reinforcing tape, preformed corners, and continuity with the drain flange must be verified. Installing stone before a flood test can mean complete removal if a leak is discovered. Mark a “waterproofing inspection day” in the programme to protect delivery dates.
Natural-stone substrates often have stricter deflection criteria than tile, for example L/720. For large panels and thick slabs, confirm substrate stiffness and mortar coverage—wet areas require high coverage—with the installer.
3. Choose stone for appearance, acid resistance, and maintenance together
Marble, a carbonate stone, is frequently used on shower walls for its color and veining, but shampoo, body wash, hard water, and acidic cleaner can etch it easily. Many wall installations remain manageable with care, while floors combine constant wetness, friction, and product residue. If marble is selected for a shower floor, plan on a honed finish, periodic sealing, and neutral cleaner.
Granite, a silicate stone, is relatively acid resistant and hard, making it favorable for wet and commercial bathrooms in many cases. Travertine and some limestones have more pores, so filling, sealing, and maintenance demands rise in wet areas. Selecting only on “low-cost natural stone” can reverse the expected savings through maintenance. Compare three candidate stones with actual samples, water absorption, and use scenarios.

4. Finish determines both slip performance and cleaning
Polished, high-gloss stone becomes slippery when wet and makes etching and water marks visible, so it is generally not recommended for shower floors. Honed, matte or semi-matte stone offers better grip and makes etching less conspicuous, so it is common on wet floors. Brushed and textured finishes favor slip performance but can retain soil, so their cleaning method must be decided with the finish.
Floor format also affects slipping. Small mosaics have more grout lines, which divide water flow and give foot grip, but increase grout upkeep and mold control. Large tile and slabs look clean but need closer attention to slope, coverage, and slip. DCOF references such as ANSI A326.3 are comparison indicators, not substitutes for design, maintenance, and drainage.
A common combination is polished large wall panels for luxury and honed or mosaic flooring for grip. To coordinate lot and color, allocate wall and floor pieces from the same bundle or intentionally separate tones. For a focal wall, approve veins in advance with a dry lay.
5. Treat grout, silicone, and sealing as one finishing system
Wet-area grout is often specified as polymer-modified cementitious or epoxy, while corners and fixed-fixture perimeters are finished with flexible sealant. Treating ordinary cement grout alone as “waterproof complete” easily creates paths for discoloration and leakage. Choosing a tone that shows less soil can also be practical.
Consider penetrating sealing for both stone and grout. Since showers are heavily used, a water-drop test is more reliable for resealing timing than a calendar alone. Use water sparingly until curing and sealing are complete after installation. Keep flood-test and waterproofing-warranty records together with stone lot information for easier later service.
6. Information that improves procurement and consultation
For a faster estimate, provide bathroom type (hotel, residence, or spa), shower or steam use, preferred stone for each wall, floor, and countertop, approximate area, finish (polished or honed), target installation date, drawings, and reference photos. Even for overseas or wholesale orders requiring only raw blocks or slabs, state the wet use: it changes absorption and finish recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should marble showers be avoided entirely?
Not necessarily. Many projects maintain walls with honed finish, sealing, and neutral care. Floors carry more slip, etching, and maintenance burden, so designs commonly separate granite, honed surfaces, or mosaics for the floor. Include the maintenance party and cleaner rules in the specification.
Can thicker stone replace a waterproofing membrane?
No. Stone and grout are not waterproof layers. Industry practice recommends ANSI A118.10-rated, or equivalent, waterproofing and a flood test before installing stone.
Can polished marble be used on a shower floor?
It is difficult to recommend because slipping, etching, and water marks increase. Many projects reinforce grip with honed or textured finishes and smaller formats, reserving polished stone for walls.
Does granite need no sealing?
