Shuitou Quality Inspection: What to Check First On Site
At Nan'an Shuitou stone town, every yard shows standing slabs and someone says “this will be fine.” Trouble often starts after the container closes. A bundle that drifts from the approved sample, resin marks that show only under angled light, uneven thickness, or lifted mesh on the back—once they arrive, replacement and rework costs climb.
On site the questions repeat: “They said A grade—what does that mean for us?”, “How do we separate fissures from structural cracks?”, “It is labeled 20 mm—what tolerance is allowed?”, “Can we order from photos only?” Shuitou is a hub of stock and fabrication, not a guarantee that every factory shares the same grading, tolerance, or packing habits.

First things to know: approve the bundle, not one pretty slab
The common trap in Shuitou is choosing the best single slab in the showroom and assuming the whole lot matches. Natural stone shifts background and vein density by block and bundle. “A grade” means different things by factory. In international trade, approved sample + photos/video of the shipping bundle + measurement records reduce disputes more than a grade letter alone.
Chinese building-slab standards (e.g. marble GB/T 19766, granite GB/T 18601) and ASTM soundness groups describe what repairs may be needed. Field inspection is not about memorizing standard numbers—it is about writing your project’s allowed color range, repair level, and thickness tolerance into the PO and checklist. 1. Match stone type, block, and bundle numbers first
The first gate is “is this the ordered stone?” Compare stone name (or factory code), finish (polish, hone, brush), nominal thickness, block/bundle IDs, and piece count with the PO and approved sample. Same commercial name with a different quarry or lot can shift tone.
When selecting in the yard, designate the exact shipping bundles, request a slab number list and full-face photos. Verbal “we can swap a similar bundle” makes arrival claims hard. For large commercial jobs, prefer same-block / same-bundle sets; lock sequence for bookmatch and wide walls.
2. Read color, vein, and selection at distance and under angled light
Step back 2–3 m and view the whole bundle. One-sided dark backgrounds, abrupt vein breaks, or uneven mineral spots can signal mixed selection. Then use angled light and neutral LED (~4000K) to catch resin haze, gloss unevenness, and micro-pitting.
Marble and quartzite need vein flow and background contrast; granite needs grain and dark spots; travertine needs pores and fill quality. 3. Keep fissures, cracks, and repairs transparent
Natural fissures differ from open structural cracks. Open gaps under angled light, dark shadow lines, sticky or yellow resin, and large patch repairs belong on the record. Like ASTM soundness groups, ask how much repair the stone needs for the use (exterior, load, thin panels).
Resin is not automatically “bad”—it is standard for many marbles. Risk rises when repair scope is hidden, color match fails, or the surface stays rough. Check the back as well. Photograph repairs, fill, and mesh close-up, and note reject / replace / downgrade on the checklist.
4. Capture thickness, flatness, and edges as numbers
“20 mm” is nominal. Professional plants often discuss ±1–2 mm tolerance; large spread within a slab or bundle shakes saw settings, edge depth, and sink clips. Measure multiple points with a digital caliper (six or more in practice)—corners and mid-span long edges—and record min, max, and average.
Also check flatness (bow, wave), squareness, and edge chips. For cut-to-size and curtain wall, compare drawing tolerances with factory readings and release mass production only after first-piece approval. Mixed thickness or finish in one bundle raises site waste if not separated before fabrication.
5. Inspect back mesh, reinforcement, and fabrication on the reverse
Many marble slabs use fiberglass mesh and epoxy. Lifted mesh, bubbles, or failed adhesive can lead to breakage under sawing or CNC vibration. Some curtain-wall guidance calls for specific mesh weight and adhesive standards—if your project specifies mesh/resin, copy it into the PO.
For cut-to-size, verify edges, holes, grooves, and chamfers against drawings, and confirm dry-lay for vein continuity and panel order. Premium walls and bookmatch benefit from the Dry-Lay Approval step before shipment.
6. Lock packing, labels, and pre-shipment evidence before sealing
Passing the yard still fails if packing is weak—transit damage then looks like “quality failure.” Photograph crate strength, padding between slabs, moisture protection, bundle/slab labels, and packing lists. Loading photos, inspection video, and quantity checks before seal make arrival claims easier.
Third-party inspection (e.g. SGS) is an option for large or high-value orders; for daily buys, buyer checklist + supplier measurements + designated bundles already cut risk. Even when Shuitou pushes “ship fast,” leave an approval stamp before the container is sealed.
FAQ
Can we order from photos only in Shuitou?
Small, low-risk lots sometimes can. For commercial area, wide fields, or bookmatch, get full-face photos/video and number lists of the shipping bundles, and if possible video-call to point at specific slabs for thickness and repairs. A small sample cannot show full vein movement or structural risk.
Is asking for “A grade” enough?
Often no. Factories define A differently. Safer practice is to write approved sample photos, allowed tone width, allowed repair types, thickness tolerance, and finish into the PO as sentences.
Should we avoid resin-treated slabs?
Not necessarily. Many marbles use resin and mesh as standard. Avoid heavy patches, color mismatch, cloudy surfaces, and lifted mesh—repairs that are opaque or structurally weak.
What thickness tolerance is reasonable?
It depends on project and fabrication. Practice often cites ±1–2 mm; engineered quartz may be tighter. What matters is agreeing a number and verifying it on the bundle.
Is arrival inspection enough?
Arrival checks are needed, but international stone has high replacement and rematch cost. Pre-shipment approval is the main quality gate; arrival inspection mainly covers transit damage, quantity, and labels.
